Flower of Life

Ciao! For one of my fashion classes I had to create an editorial inspired by art. Since I have moved to Miami and taken this Art History class I have gained an appreciation for Frida Khalo. I love her art as well as an artist. Frida was an activist as well as a feminist and often projected her emotions and political l views through her paintings. I created an “editorial” inspired by both her art and her personal style. She either dressed in traditional Mexican clothing or androgenously, with men’s style suits and jackets (hey, fashion has no gender.) “Flower of Life” was the name of one of her paintings, so that is what I called this editorial.

Frida painted many self portraits, so its not difficult to be inspired by her style I was inspired by the traditional Mexican clothes she wore and combined it with my style and culture. This skirt is a traditional Puerto Rican Bomba dance skirt. Frida often wore scarves and wraps so I added this floral shawl from spain ( top left.) She also wore flowers in her hair so I wore this floral headband also for a pop of color. I love flower crowns and I actually found this one at Claires!

his look is a more modern interpretation of Frida’s style. I found this skirt from a Mexican designer called Soli ethnic on Etsy. The print is very Frida. I think she would definitely approve of supported a local (to her) female owned small business!

I found this entire outfit at a store called Mikino at the Dolphin Mall here in Miami. These jeans are very unique and include at lot of elements found in her paintings like the flower, the heart and even says feminist. This is another modern nob to Frida and the embellishments add a little 1980s touch.

This is another, more casual interpretation of her look. This top is also from Soli ethnic on Etsy. The embroidered flowers are also a nod to the flowers she painted and the flowers she wore in her hair. Frida often wore her hair with braids on top. Since I am not very skilled at braiding I wore this braided headband from Madison Braids.
